Cafe Fashionista Featured in US Airways Magazine

Back in November of 2009 I was contacted by a fellow blogger, requesting that I be a part of their coffee guest post series. The result was my ode to New York City coffee shops entitled Sipping in the City. While expected to be a one-time venture, I enjoyed the process of putting a post together on such a topic so much, that I created the Cruisin’ Cafes series right here on Café Fashionista. While no longer an active weekly feature, the memory of Cruisin’ Cafes will forever live on; especially since one of the pieces written for said column, was recently published in the April 2010 issue of US Airways Magazine.

The holiday festivities had only just ended, when I received an e-mail from Melissa Byrd, the Senior Editor of US Airways, requesting if she could publish Crusin’ Cafes: Paris France, my tribute to tres chic cafes located in the city of light; of course, I accepted (after approximately 25 minutes of jumping up and down screaming “I’m dying!” at the top of my lungs, mind you).

US Airways is full of articles written by the hands of novelists, doctors, lawyers, World Record Holders, and the like; so being in such good, creative company was a thrill in itself. But seeing the final piece in all of its published glory has left me beaming from ear to ear. As US Airways Magazine is exclusive to those flying upon US Airways, I am scanning the piece on here (click the images to enlarge them!); but who knows, perhaps one day you will be aboard a flight, and you’ll see a copy nestled in the seat pocket right in front of you – and if you do, pick it up and give it a browse, for it is chockfull of fabulous pieces that span everything from books to business, travel to history, and everything in between!

Fashionably yours!

Thanks to US Airways for the magazine scans, and Tiffany Sorocco (my sister) for the picture of me in the sunnies.

Cruisin' Cafes: Las Vegas, NV

There’s really no need to say anything, darlings; I’m already quite well aware of the fact that Las Vegas, Nevada seems an unlikely place to visit when cruising cafes is on the agenda. As the self-professed “Entertainment capitol of the world,” and the bearer of bright lights, the cha-ching of slot machines, and an abundance of casino resorts it seems anything but quaint. But perhaps it is precisely those very things which are indicative of the childlike charm lurking beneath Las Vegas’ flashy façade.

Like the topsy turvy adventures which plagued the tow-headed Alice once she tumbled down the Rabbit’s Hole; nestled down dingy back roads, mere footsteps away from the strip, and right alongside fine dining restaurants, Las Vegas harbors a multitude of mystifying locations intent on whipping up frothy, caffeinated confections with a side of enchanting charisma that will undoubtedly cast a spell upon you in no time at all!

Sunrise Coffee Co. Relaxation may not be a delicacy offered on the menu, but from the moment you stroll inside the double doors of Sunrise Coffee Co., it is as if every care, worry, or contemplation that has left your mind a muddled mess for the past week vacates your body, leaving you with a clear head and a craving to curl up in a cushy chair with a soy chai-latte and toil the afternoon away.

Far from touristy, it is evident that the low key ambiance of Sunrise is both friendly and locally-based simply by observing the good-natured banter between baristas and repeat customers alike. Friendly smiles trim the comfortable environment which is laced with shimmering parquet floors and speckled with hardwood tables topped with bouquets of fresh-cut flowers. On the walls hangs work created by local artists; in the bakery display cases sits locally-made delicacies; and from the hidden speakers floats unique melodies. But the true showpiece of Sunrise, aside from the spacious patio situated outside, is the oversized bookshelf offering visitors everything from textbooks to guides devoted to video game strategies – an eclectic mix you can’t resist. Order a biscotti to accompany your espresso…you’re going to be here for awhile. 3130 E. Sunset Rd., Suite A, Las Vegas, NV 89120.

reJAVAnate reJAVAnate is the coffee shop you no longer thought existed. Tucked between, of all things, a Blockbuster Video and Food 4 Less, reJAVAnate embraces the grassroots way of life, getting back to the very things that made coffee shops popular so many years ago; whilst still maintaining cutting edge characteristics – a juxtaposition between two eras that help one to appreciate the simpler things in life without having to forgo modern conveniences, such as technology.

During the daylight hours, the computers lining the walls of reJAVAnate, serving up free WiFi to patrons, are full of young entrepreneurs, students, and bloggers, all taking advantage of the laidback, quiet ambiance, perfect for studying or simply sipping a macchiato as you lean your head back and get lost in the music blaring from your iPod. Once night falls, however, there is a throwback to days of yore. Some evenings cater to the noir of the 1950s, offering poetry readings, open-mic nights, and jazz tunes; others are more haut monde, featuring live local bands and charity events. Pop in bright and early to check your e-mail over a morning mocha; or unwind in one of the cozy chairs after dinner with a hot chocolate and Kringle filled with strawberry cream, marzipan, or apple cinnamon – your sweet tooth won’t be sorry! 330 E. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89121.

Cruisin' Cafes: Portland, OR

It’s really quite simple dolls…I blame the music. Declared as the “indie rock mecca” by Slate magazine back in 2007; Portland, Oregon has earned the reputation of harboring one of the most incredible music scenes in the country. Therefore, as an individual who holds fast to the notion that “every moment in life deserves a soundtrack” I see it of the utmost importance to take a detour through Downtown Portland on one’s quest for caffeinated complacency.

Unlike so many locales boasting promising harmonious talent; Portland is one of the very few that nurtures an aesthetic which balances perfectly between grungy and glittering. A sense of atmosphere that allows one to cast aside their cares, mellow out, and fully and completely embrace their inner Penny Lane – shaking out their hair, trailing their fingers along the unseen air as they drive alongside the Willamette River, and candidly soaking up the creative culture. I hope you’re wearing your American Apparel Wool Floppy Hat darlings, for our road trip is just beginning!

Three Friends Coffee House Don’t fib my loves; we’ve all encountered him. You know exactly the one that I’m talking about. The kid whose house everyone would congregate at after school on Friday afternoons for the sheer fact that his mother provided the best snacks (and kept them coming!), coupled with the verifiable truth that he was always in possession of the latest toy that our parents refused to buy specifically for us. Three Friends Coffee House is the foodie-loving adult counterpart of that very person; sans the presence of an overbearing parent, to be sure.

From the moment you swing the front door open be prepared to meet your second family, for Three Friends Coffee House, with its basement-like interior, is destined to become your home away from home. A tiny stage sits snuggly beside a bar along the window, creating the perfect platform for the occasional jazz band to set-up and lull you into a caffeine-laced trance; while plush couches (a prime place for the techie looking to settle in and blog for awhile) sit atop roughhewn wood floors which add a sprinkling of rustic refinement to the atmosphere. It is the charming little picnic tables sitting out front, however, that offer the absolute best seating – and an ideal place for people-watching along 12th Avenue. Don’t miss the White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Latte…it is heaven on earth! 201 SE 12th Ave., Portland, OR 97214.

Crowsenberg’s Half & Half Like its title would lead one to believe, Half & Half is an unconventional location that bridges the gap between cute and hipster, without ever going too far in either direction. Situated downtown, just a stone’s throw away from Powell’s Books, Jackpot Records, and Reading Frenzy – some of my very favorite Portland haunts – Half & Half makes for the perfect place to pop into whenever you feel the desire to tap into your creative side; or simply to indulge in a warm cup of pure bliss.

The quintessential Portland coffee shop, Half & Half retains a DIY-inspired design courtesy of the rotating art and wide array of tattered flyers announcing various events taking place around town adorning the walls; an indie blueprint made even more prominent by the haphazard jumble of various knickknacks for sale – such as buttons to commemorate your visit, which, oddly enough, you will find yourself incapable of resisting – sitting along the countertop. Yet it is the sunshiny, yellow ceramic mugs that your drink du jour arrives in that will put a spring in your step regardless of how gloomy the weather outside is! Come for the Espresso, stay for the Fluffernutter Sandwiches, Deviled Eggs, and Homemade Cookies. 923 SW Oak St., Portland, OR 97205.

Cruisin' Cafes: Grand Rapids, MI

Kitty cats, the name Grand Rapids alone harbors promise for a locale best known for its slightly unglamorous nickname of the “Furniture City.” It is awash with a glittering ambiance synonymous with that of a recently uncorked bottle of champagne fizzing with excitement, luster, and new endeavors; a title which seemingly allows the individual in question to drift dramatically into its boundaries to uncover the unrecognized fashion-forward finesse proffered via its sophisticated downtown cityscape which lights up like Times Square come nightfall; or the overwhelming charm of quaint Victorian homes in Heritage Hill, and historical venues brimming with natty noir and visions of fedora-wearing detectives such as the Wealthy Street Theatre.

Given the vast array of personalities found within this one minute setting, an area which doubles as the home of the main character in The Polar Express, in addition to Chris Van Allsburg, the book’s author, it should come as no surprise that cute cafes are plentiful; and absolute essential stop-offs for the individual seeking a clandestine tête-à-tête with a cute boy while awaiting her morning mocha!

The Sparrows Coffee Tea and Newsstand Dolls, despite the fact that The Sparrows Coffee Tea and Newsstand is literally located smack dab in the middle of a diminutive residential neighborhood, making it a slightly off-the-beaten-path sort of location for someone who doesn’t live mere footsteps from the salmon-hued structure adorned with forest green awnings typically seen decorating swank restaurants in Beverly Hills; the aura which virtually bursts out at you simply from standing in the doorway is enough to lure you away from your typical coffee house haunt for an experience that you will never want to end.

Aesthetically, when gazed upon from the outside, you can’t help but think of the gingerbread house trimmed in confectionary from the tale Hansel and Gretel. Yet once inside, you are not welcomed by an oversized oven or a nasty witch, as the infamous brother / sister duo were; rather, you are waved into a room trimmed in rustic wood paneling. Along the right wall sit an abundance of hard-to-find newspapers, magazines, and books ripe for the visitor’s choosing; while jars of loose leaf teas and locally-made jewelry line the long countertops. Sink into one of the colossal chairs sitting by the front window with a chai latte and spend a gloomy afternoon quietly watching the rainfall. 1035 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.

76 Coffee Only four words have the power to accurately sum up 76 Coffee; and those four words, my loves, are One. Of. A. Kind. Like a diamond in the rough, 76 Coffee gleams in all of its caffeine-encumbered glory, creating a priceless scene which swallows you whole, and lingers around you long after you have vacated the premises, lodging itself in your thoughts until you finally breakdown and return to the scene of the crime.

Unlike some shops that suck you in and spit you out the moment you have swallowed the last drops of your demitasse; the vibe of 76 Coffee is synonymous with that of an extended family. Regulars stop by your table for brief chats; the baristas are ready, willing, and able to whip up any type of drink you can possibly imagine; a “free” bookshelf offers a large collection of reading material to patrons; an eclectic mix of kitschy yet creative graffiti mars the walls; and a non-stop barrage of amazing music creates a melodic white noise which literally lulls you into a daydream.

Yes, the atmosphere is smoky, but that’s just one of the characteristics which add to the enchantment; plus, the clever titles given to each drink more than make up for it. Try “That Thing That Guy Gets,” the Carmello (like the candy bar!), or “The Horse You Rode in On.” Your tastebuds will thank you! 1507 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.

Cruisin' Cafes: Atlanta, GA

Though we may be incapable of putting our frippery-adorned fingers on the precise reason, there is something quite illustrious and enchanting about the city of Atlanta. A glamorous gleam enshrouding the entire metropolis which casts a subtle sparkle upon the magnificent skylines of Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead, making one feel as if they have stepped directly into the pages of a fairytale location shaped, formed, and fashioned at the talented hands of a budding author.

Perhaps we can attribute such a sensation to the allure proffered by the thought of the Southern Belle, dripping with pearls and donning a hoop skirt and straits as she sips sweet tea in a Victorian parlor, perfectly coiffed curls framing her face. Or maybe it is the hopeful visualization of being swept off one’s feet by a dapperly-dressed Southern Gentleman rife with gracious manners and a mischievous twinkle lurking behind his charming smile. Darlings whatever the true reason, one has not experienced sophistication until they have sipped a stone’s throw away from SunTrust Plaza, or chatted over cups of café au lait while overlooking Centennial Olympic Park. For a heaping dose of Southern Hospitality there is no more pleasing place to toast than the ambrosial Atlanta.

Gathering Grounds Historic Kirkwood’s Gathering Grounds is synonymous with a lullaby used to hum an infant to sleep; both envelop one in a calming hush that invokes all of the comforts of home, yet the former possesses the ability to instantly awaken one’s senses with the added hint of fresh-brewed coffee lingering in the air.

From the moment you step off the quiet, tree-lined Kirkwood pavement and enter Gathering Grounds you are welcomed into a second family of sorts; oftentimes greeted by an employee upon arrival with the intention of inviting you into an illustrious little world speckled with slightly moody lighting, a handful of overstuffed loveseats, cognac-colored walls, and a gritty aesthetic which proffers the sort of well-bred warehouse vibe experienced only within the fictitious pages of a volume of F. Scott Fitzgerald. A sentiment only made stronger with the addition of the smooth jazz soundtrack burbling in the background.

Stacks of reading material and games litter the tiny tables scattered throughout; yet it is the honest sincerity of both the establishment and those behind it which stands out upon each and every visit. The silent proposal to linger for as long, or as little, as you’d like clinches Gathering Grounds as a neighborhood hot spot you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away from. Mellow Marsh, Celestial Charm, Peppermint Preacher…be prepared for a selection of beverages that will make your mouth water by title alone! 1994 Hosea L Williams Dr., Atlanta, GA 30317.

SIP The Experience Dolls it’s nearly impossible not to hear Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl buzzing through your brain as you sashay into SIP The Experience. Externally it’s quite easy to mistake SIP for a bank harboring countless years of history; but, unexpectedly, as you toss open the front doors, an undeniable blend of urbanity, cosmopolitanism, and sassy savoir faire encompasses you without delay, making one believe that, at any given moment, an incognito celebrity sporting oversized dark sunglasses, a Southern drawl, and pounds of dazzling baubles beaming from around her neck will step inside and take your place in line.

Nestled behind a multitude of chain restaurants in the Lindbergh City Center Plaza, SIP is one of those trendy little cafes that dreams are made of; a dissociative dining experience which bridges the gap between hipster hangout and classy coffee shop, ideal for making goo-goo eyes at a new paramour over Skinny Vanilla Lattes or clinching a business deal with a Soy Iced Chai Tea in hand.

Modernistic white metal chairs juxtapose with wooden tables covered in a haphazard jumble of fashion magazines; while vaulted ceilings and large windows allowing sunlight to stream in toss a blissful warmth upon each seating area – from the simple table and chairs to the cozy lounge, quite reminiscent of a luxurious living room, awash in cushy sofas. If people-watching is your thing, however, or you merely want to feel the cool breeze upon your face there’s no better place to take up residence than the outside patio which overlooks the MARTA Station. Savor the Lavender Pistachio Hot Chocolate, which is just as delicious as the name is pretty. 528 Main St., Atlanta, GA 30324.

Cruisin' Cafes: Los Angeles, CA

As the aptly-titled Golden State, far too many underestimate the true appeal and ability of uncovering captivating cafes teeming with history, and indulging in piping hot potations rich with chocolate, vanilla, and caramel flavors mingling with luscious layers of alabaster-hued whipped cream reminiscent of plush white clouds floating carelessly in the clear blue sky when traversing the sultry soils of Southern California – specifically Los Angeles. It’s a true tragedy if you ask me; an odium of sorts brought about by the unwavering, steady sunshine which makes everyday beach ready, coupled with the lyrical musings of Albert Hammond’s It Never Rains in Southern California. When it all comes down to it, however, so is not the case.

Dolls, regardless of the slew of beaches ripe for one’s picking, or the omnipresence of teeny tiny bikinis, flip flops, and cutoff denim shorts, Los Angeles is a luxurious location for hopping from one café hot spot to another. As the home of the culture-infused Little Tokyo, celebrity-spotting Hollywood, shopper’s paradise known as Olvera Street, and countless other can’t-miss landmarks; The City of Angels proffers a virtual plethora of pulchritudinous places perfect for reacquainting oneself with Americano’s, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and Green Tea – all it takes is a bit of browsing to find complete bliss!

Lost Souls Café To put it in simple terms, Lost Souls Café is that exclusive social circle you begged admittance to during your high school years; only instead of being turned away by the head cheerleader or cute boy playing the role of Rebel Without a Cause with a severe tongue-lashing and a villainous laugh heard round the world, Lost Souls welcomes you with open arms – as long as you’re able to find it, that is.

Camouflaged from prying eyes within a tiny alleyway draped with singular lines of fairy lights crisscrossing overhead, your only indication of its presence a small sign boasting the words Lost Souls Café spotted on the street; Lost Souls is, from external presentation, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene. Nevertheless, once you find your way inside, you can’t help but fall under the enchanting spell effused by its sights, sounds, and scents alone.

Exposed pipes on the ceiling, and a roomy setup create a slightly grungy, warehouse vibe, which juxtaposes with a modernistic, artist’s loft aesthetic when the large metal tables – perfect for big groups – pristine white walls, and various pieces of kitschy art decorating the interior are taken into account. Yet, even through all this, Lost Souls extends a cozy charm to customers which give it a homey, hole in the wall atmosphere that is nearly impossible to tear yourself away from. The hush-hush high society structure will lure you in; the crepes, chocolate banana shakes, and cappuccinos will keep you coming back for more! Harlem Place Alley, 124 W. 4th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

The Conservatory for Coffee, Tea & Cocoa Darlings, while the name will make you think otherwise, there is no admittance process one must go through to achieve entry into The Conservatory for Coffee, Tea & Cocoa; nor is there an enforced dress code prohibiting those not decked out in plaid from passing through the sole front door flanked by tiny tables topped with umbrellas to shield visitors with a desire to sit out of doors from the scorching sun.

Though the moniker will fill your mind with thoughts of pretentious prep schoolers, The Conservatory for Coffee, Tea & Cocoa serves up some of the finest latte art imaginable from its cushy Culver City cubbyhole, as opposed to presenting patrons with scholars seeking to further their artistic endeavors. Situated mere steps from Sony Studios, The Conservatory is a family-owned paragon which opened its doors back in 1995, and has remained a fabulous fixture in the community ever since.

Feed bags full of coffee beans from all over the world greet you upon arrival; while a stout tree sporting full branches, leaves, and even a little hidey hole with stuffed animals popping out from within stands tall front and center making one feel as if they are sipping right in the middle of the rainforest. Even better than the décor, however, is the ambiance, which makes you feel as if you’re amongst friends even when simply chatting with the baristas whipping up your requested beverage. Don’t depart without savoring the Vanilla Latte; you’ll never taste something as explosive! 10117 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232.

Cruisin' Cafes: Paris, France

Darlings it was not solely Ernest Hemingway who fashioned a fervor in me to navigate the foreign soil of Paris, France’s aire urbaine; nor is he specifically the individual to point fingers at regarding my ever so slight obsession with the charming haunt – a passion which has begun to spill over into my everyday life as visible via the red berets sitting askew atop my head, and the addition of tops festooned in horizontal black and white stripes speckling my wardrobe.

The truth of the matter is that the classic, effortless luxury of La Ville-Lumière has always lit a fire within my soul; a flame which only flickered brighter with my introduction to Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and the bewitching character of Brett Ashley. Her flirty elusiveness and penchant for popping up in various coffee shops littering grand old Paris worked as one to make me realize that café cruising is truly incomplete if not experienced along the Champs-Élysées, Quartier Latin, and Montmartre – locations where one can get lost in a handsome stranger’s eyes while daintily downing a demitasse. I truly hope that you’re prepared my loves, for The City of Light…here we come!

L’Autre Café Along the stark white rue Jean Pierre lies a scarlet-shaded structure sitting mere feet from the faded black concrete traversed daily by speeding Vespas and miniature cars on their way to unknown destinations; a topsy-turvy splash of color which freckles the avenue in the same fashion that glistening stars light up the dark as night sky once evening falls. While, by outward appearances, easily mistaken for a playful toy shop proffering porcelain dolls, or a smoky nightclub graced by the presence of sparkling lounge singers; the crimson hue of L’Autre Café is neither. Rather, it is home to an ambrosial bistro brimming with old-fashioned charm!

Upon opening the front doors you are taken from a gritty street into a homey atmosphere full of true Parisian spirit with a splash of Moroccan influences courtesy of the red, orange, and brown color scheme – all of which takes on a golden glow when the light streams through the large front windows. But the true piece de resistance of L’Autre is the picture perfect nooks and crannies harboring cozy tables for two, booths nestled in hidey-hole corners, and vintage coat stands for visitors to hang their hats. Pop in for the café au lait; but don’t leave without savoring the Sunday brunch! 62 rue Jean Pierre Timbaud, 75011 Paris, France.

L Apparemment Café Kitty cats every so often we stumble upon a diamond in the rough; a splendrous little gem grinning like the Cheshire Cat from its clandestine post concealed from prying eyes and only visible to those with a touch of imagination and the capability to uncover fabulousness. L Apparemment Café is such a place.

One does not know cool until they have sashayed into L Apparemment. The dim lighting instantly creates an abrasive, slightly archaic aesthetic which juxtaposes between a musty, vintage detective vibe and haut monde ambiance – two completely different eras which converge into one saucy stop-off overflowing with brazen attitude. Huddled within walking distance of the Archives Nationales, Musée Carnavalet, Picasso Museum, and Cognacq-Jay Museum, L Apparemment is the trendy little café you’ve always dreamed of visiting.

Lamps cast a glamorous glow upon each table, providing the perfect light source for playing your board game of choice; overstuffed chairs contribute a lived-in aura; and a choice location makes it a must for tourists and residents alike. Enjoy a game of checkers with your croissant; play Monopoly over mochas; or simply shoot the breeze with jam and butter in hand. Chances are, you’ll be spending quite a bit of time in this beauty! 18 Rue de Coutures Saint-Gervais, 75003 Paris, France.

Cruisin' Cafes: Seattle, WA

I have forever harbored an infatuation with the glamorous locale of Seattle, Washington. The nonstop drizzle, overcast skies, and ever so slight chill that lingers languidly in the atmosphere has always been an aspect that piqued my interest and struck a chord deep within me; a haunting elegance put forth that makes one instantly think of gothic, Victorian mansions pinpointing quiet neighborhoods and meadows full of dew-drenched flowers. But it is not just the ambiance of the Emerald City that is so appealing. For a café lover, such a forecast creates a truly fabulous setting for finding cozy coffee shops for one to take up residence in – even if just for a few hours. A sophisticated stop-off made with helping one to escape the cold climate and warm up with a luscious latte, a dreamy hot chocolate, or simple cup of Joe. Here, a duo of my dearest!

Katy’s Corner Café Darlings there is truly something to be said for a place that effortlessly emanates that home-away-from-home vibe that so many spend years searching for, but very rarely manage to find. Katy’s Corner Café is such a location. Small enough to feel like the living room that you’ve just vacated at your very own humble abode, yet harboring enough space to prevent any type of claustrophobic feelings from the customer; Katy’s is the spitting image of the cozy, comfortable neighborhood coffee shop one is bombarded with images of on the small screen, with the simple difference that it is, to be sure, a reality.

A shabby chic aesthetic created by the crimson-colored walls proudly displaying the quirky, “for sale” art of local artists converges with picturesque windows which allow beams of sunlight to pour in upon the leather couch, loveseat, and small smattering of tables decorating Katy’s; a charming mix that is just as eclectic as its clientele. But it is the abundance of perky personalities and friendly faces that make one want to return again and again.

The baristas, and Katy herself, embrace the words of Gary Portnoy’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name (aka the Cheers theme song), and have no qualms about remembering the orders of their patrons, and shooting the breeze with everyone from stroller-pushing soccer moms to hipsters styled in skinny jeans and Dick Tracy-inspired fedoras – an attentive quality that further encompasses the irresistible homey elements. Don’t miss the Caramel Latte – a scrummy treat that forgoes the typical caramel flavoring syrup, and is instead made with true caramel sauce. 2000 East Union St., Seattle, WA 98122.

Bauhaus Books & Coffee Like Seattle itself, libraries are full of hidden mysteries and secrets, all waiting to be discovered by those who take it upon themselves to spend the time to do so. Couple that elusiveness with the sweet smells of peanut butter and chocolate cookies, hot chocolate loaded with luxurious piles of winter white whipped cream, the very offbeat addition of a Ding Dong or two, and a perfect view of the Space Needle, and you are left with the very eclectic Bauhaus Books & Coffee.

Bauhaus is the quintessential coffeehouse; a diamond in the rough that pays tribute to the sophisticated yet gritty noir of yesteryear so eloquently described by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway via incredibly large bookcases brimming with magnificently musty old books, antique typewriters, and a warehouse-like design that extends from the first floor all the way to the second.

Opened in 1993, Bauhaus is the epitome of cool, allowing people from all walks of life to pop in for a snack, and virtually get lost in daydreaming as you watch the foot traffic pass by the oversized windows, strike up a conversation with a handsome stranger, or simply while away the time with a classic in one hand and a croissant in the other. Order a Kool-Aid in addition to your Americano to relive the innocence of your childhood! 301 East Pine St., Seattle, WA 98122.

Cruisin' Cafes: Venice, Italy

My loves, I have no qualms in telling you right now that I find it a true abomination for one to state that they have not yet been tempted by the tantalizing sights, scents, and surroundings of Italy’s Venice. There is a fascinating factor about the location; a bewitching charm that virtually consumes your mind, body, and soul, making it impossible to escape the luxurious lure of the Piazza San Marco or Grand Canal. But darlings, I digress; in a place brimming so richly with history and romanticism, there is no question in my mind that it is littered with some of the most captivating cafes simply awaiting your arrival!

Gran Caffe Chioggia There is perhaps no finer way to savor a mug of steaming hot chocolate overwhelmed with multiple cocoa flavors and piled high with luscious snow-white whipped cream than in the accompaniment of subtle sounds served up via a live violin player to create the perfect ambrosial ambiance for an evening spent in St. Mark’s Square; but that is precisely what you get when you snag a seat at Gran Caffe Chioggia.

Nestled under the Libreria Sansoviniana’s opulent arches in the palatial Piazzeta, Gran Caffe Chioggia sits within a piece of architecture crafted during the 16th Century, a position which adds a touch of grandiose glamour to the aesthetic that juxtaposes between old-fashioned elegance and modernistic cosmopolitanism. Order a bubbling Bellini during twilight and devour the dreamy strains of the talented violinist until The Camanile rings the bell signifying that it is midnight and the evening is over; or pop in for a coffee just as the sun is rising for a truly heavenly view of the city! Piazzeta San Marco 8-12 Venice Italy.

Caffe Florian For those curious to see what Venice’s blissful Caffe Florian is all about, one need only to envision waiters styled in Chuck Bass-inspired black bow ties and white suit jackets, dainty cups crafted out of porcelain materials, and silver pots that shine as brightly as the gilded mirror hanging upon the wall in your foyer; for these are the things you will first notice upon entering the chic spot.

A sophisticated staple of St. Mark’s Square since its opening back in December of 1720, Caffe Florian has become a true symbol of the city over the years, one that proffers a décor synonymous with that of a church with vaulted ceilings courtesy of the stained-glass windows, and cozy rooms – many of which harbor the presence of celebrities sipping away at their drink du jour. And should you find yourself plagued with a desire to sit out of doors, be prepared for a fantastic setting for people watching for hours upon hours. The coffee? Celestial. The hot chocolate? Heavenly. The lattes? Lush. Just remember to pick up a velvet bag full of Pure Cocoa before leaving, kitty cats – that way you can make your own scrummy beverages at home! Piazza San Marco Venice.

Harry’s Bar Darlings, how can one possibly refuse an atmosphere loved and lusted over by classy film stars and starlets of the 1960s and 70s? A zone cornered off for the rich and elite donning dark, oversized sunglasses and canoodling with handsome suitors in the throes of hush-hush trysts? Admit it kittens; a task of this magnitude is downright unfathomable, let alone attainable – especially in the year 2010. Hence the reason why it is encouraged that you spend at least one afternoon nursing something sinfully delicious within the chichi confines of this stunning stop-off.

A virtual stone’s throw from the Vaporetto and Gondola dock area, Harry’s Bar is the birthplace of the bellini; yet still manages to offer the customer a dazzling variety of warm beverages to help one take the chill off. Still, it is not solely the array of drinks which make Harry’s Bar so alluring; rather it is the gritty noir of the inner design which make’s it appear as if the decorator took a page out of one of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s prestigious tales of all things fabulous and fancy! Come for the Sunday Brunch; stay for the memories! Calle Vallaresso, 1323, Venice.

Cruisin' Cafes: Cambridge, MA

Can you really and truly blame me, kitty cats? As a self-proclaimed college town, it is not at all a surprise that I, a college student myself, would be drawn to Cambridge, Massachusetts’ collegiate ambiance. The hallowed halls proffered by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The towering steeple-inspired buildings like that displayed via Cambridge City Hall and Cambridge Public Library. Even the abundance of street musicians and performers lurking in Harvard Square, eager to entertain anyone and everyone who strolls by. But perhaps the biggest draw of such an old-fashioned yet enchanting location can be attributed to the fact that, as a town riddled with University students, it is without question that it is brimming with quaint cafes just waiting to be discovered for late night study sessions, and catching up with old friends!

Diesel Café Whether you’re attempting to knock some sense into yourself after pulling an all-nighter, or are simply on a quest to indulge in something yummy that will get you through the work day on your way to the office, there is truly no better place to refuel than Diesel Café.

Located in Davis Square, Diesel Café is a hipster hotspot that juxtaposes between comfortable coffee shop and funky industrial stomping ground for a wide array of personalities all on an identical mission…to find a cozy nook that serves up menu items with the ability to get one’s appetite raring to go – no matter how picky or quirky their taste buds are!

Inside there is no shortage of charisma. Each wall is painted in a shade stolen directly from the primary colors palette – a haphazard jumble of hues that could easily be thought of as uncomfortable on the eyes, but is rather quite serene when viewed by visitors; while kitschy gas station and road signs mingle alongside art pieces that change on a monthly basis, a clever way to change the atmosphere for regulars. But it is the pool table and vintage black and white photo booth located within which adds to the brilliance of Diesel, and makes it quite easy for one to take a load off and have a bit of fun in-between deadlines. Come for the Mocha, but do not miss out on the Cider Delux or Little Piston 2.0 sandwich! 257 Elm Street, Somerville, MA 02144.

Simon’s Coffee Shop There are very few places nowadays that present a side of family with every order; a vibe synonymous with a warm hug from a grandparent. Simon’s Coffee Shop, found within the heart of Porter Square, is such a location.

Like your mother’s refrigerator, adorned with artwork and achievements of her offspring, Simon himself creates a familial environment within the confines of his small, yet sublime space, by scrawling announcements extending congratulations to his employees, many of whom double as students, upon graduation atop a chalkboard – the very same one, in fact, which announces daily soup specials and lists of flavor shots offered for your drink du jour! Tiny tables sit tucked in side by side creating an atmosphere that is more intimate than claustrophobic; yet it is the true independence of the aesthetic mixed with the subtle soundtrack murmuring in the background which transports you to another time and place. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker order the Mocha…it comes with cute designs etched into the milk! 1736 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138.

Crema Café Darlings, if you’re on the hunt for a pinch of European flair with your twice-daily dose of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, by all means, please stop your search now. Crema Café, if you hadn’t already figured it out, is destined to be your new home away from home!

Crema Café is Harvard Square’s answer to the posh patisseries and coffee shops lining the cobblestone streets of Paris; yet requires no Visa or passport to experience such ambrosial qualities. A multi-faceted location; Crema Café is like two places in one, offering an upstairs and downstairs area, both of which cater to a different character. Downstairs is the lounge, a spot conducive with a meeting place established for customers to chat with one another, hang out, and have a good time while nursing Macchiato’s, hot chocolate, and Café Au Lait’s. Upstairs features a loft where students and independent contractors can buckle down and get some work done over Looseleaf Tea, and Chai Lattes. Just don’t miss out on the fresh-baked cupcakes or Nutella and Banana Sandwich – true heaven in edible form! 27 Brattle St., Cambridge, MA 02138.

Sipping in the City

"Given enough coffee, I could rule the world."
Author Unknown

Believe it or not, I was not always the coffee lover that I am today. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, it was just shy of three years ago that I was turning my nose up at the steaming cups of caffeine, refusing to so much as smell the muddy blend let alone allow it to pass my lips. Even at this stage of the game, as much as I adore a kick of java every few hours, I can’t credit myself with being a coffee connoisseur or aficionado in any way, shape, or form; I’m simply a passionate individual with a desire to sip on something warm and cozy – a beverage synonymous with the comforts of a well-loved knit sweater. The fact that it helps me to get through the day…well, that’s just frosting on the cupcake!

But I digress; admittedly I would never survive without a cup of Joe early in the morning, or a calming cappuccino in the afternoon, or even an invigorating mug of hot chocolate right before bed. How I ever survived without such luxurious concoctions is truly unfathomable.

For me, warm beverages are the equivalent of an old friend re-entering one’s world, or a cute boy doing something unexpectedly romantic just to make you smile. They are a part of the simplicities in life that make one’s existence enchanting, charming, and magnificent with a singular sip. Therefore it is truly no surprise that I have my favorites; Toffee Hot Chocolate, White Chocolate Coffee, and Pumpkin Pie Lattes being amongst my most beloved brews. But I’ve learned over time that savoring such delicacies in the privacy of one’s home can often leave a bitter taste in the drinker’s mouth.

"No coffee can be good in the mouth that does not first send a sweet offering of odor to the nostrils."
Henry Ward Beecher

It may sound silly. Perhaps a whimsical notion, you might say; but it’s the truth. I feel that ambiance and a charming surrounding truly do play roles in how much or how little an individual enjoys ones warm drink du jour. Cobblestoned patios add character; brick walls provide history; and very light jazz music murmuring in the background establishes old-fashion noir and glamour. Thus, when I find myself navigating the concrete jungle that is New York, I do not seek out, or comb various neighborhoods searching for the most commercialized, well-known coffee shops.

In a city as full of life and personality as New York I see these locations as clichéd. When experiencing a new place, it is best to immerse yourself in the culture and aestheticism that you would be unable to experience anywhere else. Therefore I rummage for regal little gems with the ability to tantalize my taste buds and proffer an ambrosial atmosphere. These are just three of my absolute favorites.

"No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee’s frothy goodness."
Sheikh Abd-al-Kadir

Red Horse Café – Park Slope, Brooklyn. Despite the fact that I think of Park Slope’s Red Horse Café as a blogger’s paradise, I am truly not being biased by stating that this is one of my favorite little places to hide out in whenever I find myself in New York. Located on the corner of 12th Street and 6th Avenue, Red Horse Café is, without a doubt, one of the most darling places I have ever found myself dwelling in. Due to the fact that it’s located in Brooklyn, you have the New York City cultivation and attitude, coupled with the captivating quaintness most often seen in the suburbs – a fact that is pinpointed by the tree-lined streets visible through the windows; hence, you get the best of both worlds.

But outer sights don’t even begin to compare with the beauty found right within Red Horse. The walls are lined with pieces created by the hands of local artists; while overstuffed couches, armchairs, café tables, and window-mounted bars with stools create heavenly seating options for everyone. The true charm of Red Horse, however, comes from the fact that it’s a multifaceted venue that serves yummy iced coffee (with coffee ice cubes as opposed to water-based ones!) and mind-blowing mochas to bloggers, couples, old friends, and families throughout the mornings and afternoons; then transforms into a hipster hangout featuring live musicians, and other special events come nightfall. It’s the type of place one never wants to leave; but since you ultimately have to, don’t do so without grabbing a cupcake or handful of macaroons! 497 6th Ave. (between 11th and 12th St.), Brooklyn, NY 11215.

"I orchestrate my mornings to the tune of coffee."
Harry Mahtar

Financier Patisserie – Stone Street. Please ignore the fact that Brooks Brothers reigns within the four walls of Stone Street’s Financier Patisserie. You really can’t be surprised; after all, it’s located in the heart of the Financial District. At the same time, whenever I so much as glance upon the exterior of this Wall Street wonder, I feel as if I’m transported to picturesque Paris or idyllic Italy. While many cafes embrace dark color schemes, Financier Patisserie sets itself apart by flaunting light and airy hues, outdoor tables, and elegant windows – all of which work as one to create an adorable atmosphere perfect to indulge in two of my favorite things: mochaccinos and madeleines. A word of warning…since Financier Patisserie is known for their scrummy pastries please, please, please do not walk out that door without at least a chocolate croissant or brownie in tow. They are a heavenly complement to any warm drink you happen to order. 62 Stone Street (between Mill Lane and Hanover Square), New York, NY 10004.

B Cup Café – East Village. If given the choice between moving into the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, or residing at the East Village’s B Cup Café for all of eternity, darlings I have no qualms about proclaiming that I would not even hesitate before announcing my decision…the B Cup Café, of course! While the free WiFi, Caramel Café Mocha, White Chocolate Café Mocha, and Hot Chocolate have lured me into the charming hot spot time and time again, these are not the main reasons for my frequent visits. Mais non! The truth of the matter is that I am convinced that one could find love in this enchanting East Village nook.

There’s something about the ambiance found within that makes you feel as if you will meet the cute boy of your dreams while standing in line awaiting your Frozen Vanilla and White Chocolate Café Mocha, or cozily perched upon the olive green couch flipping through the latest issue of ELLE. Perhaps your eyes will lock between sips of splendor, leading the two of you to share a Bagel with Cream Cheese before strolling into the sunset, destined to live happily ever after. It sounds outlandish, but I truly do believe that there is potential for such a tale to take place within the alluring atmosphere. 212 Ave. B. (Corner of E. 13th St.), New York, NY 10009.

"The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening cup of tea cannot be expected to reproduce."
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

These may be a few of my favorite places to "sip in the city," but there are millions of others out there eagerly awaiting your sip of approval. Find your own or share these saucy little coffee shops with me. Just make sure that you’re getting your twice daily cup of Joe somewhere!

Fashionably yours!

Cruisin' Cafes: Sydney, Australia

G’day mate! Darlings, is it wrong that my initial reason for wanting to visit Sydney, Australia was for the sheer fact that I have always wanted to rise and shine to the perennial shouts of “G’day mate!” each morning without being looked upon as if I were some sort of loon? That, of course, was before I was treated to a view of the Sydney CBD and Sydney Opera House at dusk. Even through a mere photograph, the twinkling sight alone led me to realize that there was so much more to “the Harbour City” than truly meets the eye. A glamorous locale rich with culture, brimming with beauty, and home to countless shopping Mecca’s which cater to an abundance of personalities and lifestyles. Hence the reason why I simply can’t help but believe that it is obviously a lovely location for canvassing charming cafes!

Bar Coluzzi Pardon the pun, but it can’t be helped – to put it bluntly, Darlinghurst’s Bar Coluzzi will knock you out; and not just because it is the brainchild of a boxer of the fifties who moonlighted as a barista when he wasn’t slinging punches!

A staple of Williams Street since 1957, Bar Coluzzi does not simply attempt to channel a retro vintage vibe in its ambiance; it simply oozes such traits courtesy of the fact that it has been a latte-making landmark since that very era! Opened by Roman-born Luigi Coluzzi during the height of change in the world, Bar Coluzzi was founded with the hopes of bringing a dash of Italia to sunny Sydney via fresh coffee. Decades later, the teeny tiny hole in the wall is still a one-stop shop for revelers looking to rendezvous with elegant espressos, heavenly hot cocoas, tantalizing teas, and dreamy desserts. The pristine white walls are trimmed in red and adorned with boxing memorabilia and photographs snapped ring-side; while Alice in Wonderland-sized chairs spill out onto the Victoria Street sidewalk where Bar Coluzzi rests – an ideal location for soaking up the Sydney sunshine on a lazy Sunday morning. Don’t miss the raisin toast – dip it into your rich espresso for a mind-blowing experience! 322 Victoria St., Darlinghurst NSW 2010.

Bourke Street Bakery There is no need to so much as attempt to deny it; the truth of the matter is that there is no better complement to a piping mug of hot chocolate or steaming cup of coffee than a pastry that is sure to pack on the pounds yet leave you in a state of bliss for at least a few moments. Hence the reason why Surry Hills’ Bourke Street Bakery is destined to make you willingly wait in line for upwards of an hour, if need be, for a pint-sized brush with euphoria.

Inside a trio of small tables sit scrunched side by side, a virtual arm’s length away from patisserie cases holding fresh-baked sourdough bread, chocolate tarts, and croissants drizzled with chocolate sauce, in addition to full-fledged meals of quiches and pies; while out on the footpath a handful of sidewalk seating prime for people watching is proffered to visitors, providing an optimal opportunity for taking a load off after a full day of shopping and shooting the breeze while sipping and savoring a variety of seasonal flavors. Come prepared for both eye and nose candy – the pastries are too pretty to resist, while the scent of chocolate, vanilla, spices, and coffee mingling together will transport you to another time and place…you’ve been warned, kittens! 633 Bourke St., Surry Hills NSW 2010.

Mecca Espresso You know me, never one to ignore a location with a citified, metropolitan environment – and that is precisely what King Street’s Mecca Espresso doles out; in addition to mesmerizing macchiatos, sweet soy lattes, and creamy cappuccinos, of course.

Mecca Espresso is one of those urbane getaways that serve as a staycation for locals, a vacation for out of towners. The moment you step inside you are welcomed by slightly dim lighting, modernistic espresso machines, sleek yet simple hues, and a shiny hardwood floor tinged with red – all of which converge with one another to produce a very jazzy effect; not unlike a place you could imagine finding Ella Fitzgerald crooning within. But soulful sounds are not the musical choice du jour; the harmonies heard inside Mecca Espresso are of the passing cars and traffic – a delightful soundtrack for someone who enjoys the hustle and bustle of the city. Between the amusing banter shared between staff and customers alike, the ambrosial atmosphere, and the stunning designs etched in the foam topping your desired drink, it’s impossible not to think of Mecca Espresso as a home away from home. One that always smells of mouth-watering, fresh-baked chocolate brownies! 67 King Street, Sydney NSW 2000.

Cruisin' Cafes: St. Louis, MO

I suppose I should, in the words of vintage Hilary Duff, simply come clean. While I pride myself on being a lover of all things quaint, cozy, and comfy – locations and attractions with the very same homey welcome as a roaring fire, a well-loved old blanket, or a dependable childhood friend; those are not the qualities which drew me to fall under the spell of St. Louis, Missouri. No, I’m sorry to tell you that the true appeal of this particular locale had more to do with the typical tourist temptations – the downtown entertainment district of Laclede’s Landing, the haunted horrors found at Lemp Mansion, and even the small town sophistication of the Benton Park West Streetscape. Of course, if you ask me, all this combined would be nothing without a trio of darling cafes ripe for popping into for a cocktail hour cappuccino, or daybreak demitasse!

Park Avenue Coffee Wrong state, darlings! While it shares a title with the hoity-toity location of the Big Apple, Park Avenue Coffee is, in all actuality, named for its close proximity to Lafayette Park in the heart of Lafayette Square – a picturesque spot for people watching should you be lucky enough to snag a seat on the patio; but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

If you’re looking for a home-away-from-home aesthetic, your search ends here. Park Avenue Coffee is like your mother’s beloved living room – sans the strict orders to remove your shoes before stepping foot on the carpet, or to keep your feet off the furniture. It retains a minimalist vibe while being powerfully inviting all at once courtesy of hardwood floors, vibrant hues speckling the walls, and overstuffed, chocolate-toned chairs that you could virtually get lost in. And, might I add, you will get lost – at least in the mouthwatering aromas emerging from the kitchen; for while Raspberry Mochas, Hot Chocolates, and Vanilla Lattes are whipped up by the dozen, the true crème de la crème of Park Avenue is the gooey butter cake. Pig out on a piece of Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake on the patio, or curl up in an armchair with a slice of Apple Cinnamon Gooey Butter. Your waistline may whine, but your tastebuds will explode! 1919 Park Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63104.

The Map Room Walking into The Map Room is like entering a different era; and that’s precisely where the charm of this secret treasure lurks. From outside alone, the all-brick construction casts a very old-fashioned noir, reformed firehouse aura upon the place; but even once you’ve made it inside, you can’t help but feel that you are destined to spot Jack Kerouac hunched over his latest masterpiece at a secluded table in the back; or bump into F. Scott Fitzgerald nursing a glass of Merlot upon one of the vintage couches.

The rustic elegance and glamour of The Map Room, while slightly reminiscent of an antique store laden with “Do Not Disturb” signs, is a throwback to simpler times when electricity was not yet in existence, and families would play music around the fireplace until the very last embers burned out. That’s not saying that The Map Room is not modernistic in its design; it simply has held fast to the quaint qualities of yesteryear that many have since long forgotten. But I digress; while free Wi-Fi is offered during business hours, the most enticing aspect of The Map Room is the large bookshelves brimming with the classics, and the abundance of board games available for quiet play. Couple an Austrian Mint Coffee, a Snow Geisha White Tea, or an Apple Tarte with a game of Scrabble for an evening of peaceful fun and solitude. 1901 Withnell Ave., St. Louis, MO 63118.

Coffee Cartel There’s something quite thrilling about prowling the streets late at night, when most people are tucked away safely in their beds; an undercover seductiveness that makes one feel like a cat burglar, and cloaks one in a sheath of mystery even if you’re simply munching on cold fries at the corner diner after a long night of partying, or, even better, sipping a Caramel Frappuccino topped with luscious whipped cream at a twenty-four-hour coffee shop. Coffee Cartel is the shop in question.

Unlike so many cafes that shut their doors long before the midnight hour, Coffee Cartel is that happening spot that keeps on brewing way into the wee hours of the morning, providing a primo spot for late-night gossip, early-morning study sessions, mid-afternoon dates with cute boys, and everything in between! While somewhat smoky at times, the proffered pool tables (and people lining up to challenge you to a game) in addition to the opportunities for watching an abundance of personalities come and go more than makes up for it. Plus, if you’re an insomniatic blogger looking for a place to fill up on ice cream while catching up on comments, the free Wi-Fi will most definitely keep you satiated. Just don’t forget to try the Raspberry Italian Soda – a fabulously fruity way to cap off an evening! 2 Maryland Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63108.

Which of these St. Louis cafes would you like to cruise?

Cruisin' Cafes: Toronto, ON

Darlings, I blame Hollywood, I truly do. If not for the fact that I’m constantly being bombarded with news of various television programs and films being taped on location in the aforementioned area, it probably would have remained unknown to me. That said, while the thought of hobnobbing with celebrities is what lured me into the subtle glamour proffered by Toronto, Ontario, the hip, professional, cosmopolitan, urbane vibe of this particular destination is what has kept me smitten. I think of Toronto as an international version of New York City laden with culture, architecture, and the most heavenly, gleaming view of the Harbourfront once night falls. As such, it is the ideal place to settle into a handful of quaint cafes all ripe for discovery!

Moonbean Coffee Company It was Barrie’s Peter Pan who influenced me to never let go of my childlike imagination; whom inspired me to believe in magic and fairytales – even going so far as to hold fast to the idea that someday, somehow, someway a handsome Prince will trot up to me atop a grand white horse and sweep me off my feet. Perhaps that is why I am utterly spellbound by Moonbean Coffee Company.

Found within Kensington Market, I can’t help but feel that Barrie would have been more than happy to allow his imagination to run wild while sipping a latte or nibbling upon an Orange Creamsicle right in this very location. Inside, the aesthetic is eclectic and cozy with seating to spare; yet even with all the tables nestled in close proximity to one another, there is no feeling of claustrophobia – whether you’re alone, or in a group, as you sit you feel as if you’re shrouded in your own little world, private and pensive; though the outside back patio is most certainly the piece de resistance of Moonbean. Inviting benches swing to and fro from a perch burrowed in the charming garden-like atmosphere, awaiting your pending arrival. Curl up on one with a carrot muffin and an Americano and you’ll never want to leave. 30 St. Andrew St., Toronto, ON M5T 1K6.

Saving Gigi You are all well-versed in the amount of time I devote to choosing the perfect soundtrack for just about any situation I may happen to find myself in; therefore, it is no surprise that when searching for an enchanting cafe, one must not only take the menu and ambiance of the place into consideration, but the tunes playing softly in the background, as well. Bloorcourt Village’s Saving Gigi has the lazy, languid coffee shop music down pat, establishing an even more ambrosial experience for the visitor from the moment you step inside until the time you depart.

As opposed to catering to one specific scheme of décor, the interior of Saving Gigi mixes different design elements, juxtaposing rustic, dark-stained wood plank floors with pristine white walls adorned with scant framed art pieces and an oversized mirror; a coupling that establishes a very haute monde look quite reminiscent of an upscale art gallery or museum. But unlike those places, here there are no restrictions, rules, or regulations about what you can or cannot touch. Banquet seating found along the front window is the preemptive location for sipping an Espressado while people-watching, or taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi by updating your blog while listening to the sorrowful strains of Duke Ellington poring quietly from the speakers. Do me a favor and indulge in a sandwich made on raisin bread – you won’t be sorry! 858 Bloor St. W., Toronto, ON M6G 1M4.

Luna Café It is not everyday that one stumbles upon a captivating spot situated smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood; but perhaps that is what truly makes Luna Café so enchanting…it’s location.

Snuggled between towering apartment buildings and houses, if you don’t look closely it’s quite possible that you’ll miss the hidden little gem known as Luna, for it is nearly invisible to the naked eye – until you walk through the door, that is. Precious and petite, Luna seats no more than thirty or so people at a single time; but having the chance to take a load off in her lovely locale is worth the wait, as well as the trek. While evocative of a home environment, there is a dark, brooding essence found within Luna which gives it a very weatherbeaten, Sam Spade feel that is gritty, glamorous, and oh so inviting. Come for the coffee, but stay for the scrummy weekday brunch. 181 Dovercourt Rd., Toronto, ON M6J 3C6.

Which of these Toronto cafes would you like to cruise?
