A Case for Style

Lovers, let’s be honest…no one can resist a good mystery – especially one of the fashion variety. A game of cat and mouse which leads us to the perfect pair of nude pumps; a haute session of hide and seek wherein the hidden gem is not our beloved BFF, but rather a sublime pair of floor-skimming wide leg jeans; or, in regards to today’s chic challenge, a search for a charming case to stow our techie treasures (a la Kindle’s, Laptops, MacBook’s, and iPad’s) within – like the very ones that Caseable creates for your carrying pleasure.

You guessed it, dolls! Café Fashionista has teamed up with Caseable, “…a Brooklyn and Berlin based company, offering fully customizable handmade protective sleeves for your laptop, MacBook, iPad or Kindle,” to bring one (1) savvy stylista a $60.00 Gift Certificate good towards creating your dream case!

Dial Like It's Going Out of Style!

Darlings do you recall those “around the world” activities our beloved second grade teachers thought up to help us learn more about different cultures? The ones wherein we would pack a precious stuffed animal away into a cardboard box, and send it off to a classroom in some far-off country, where it would spend a month or two with a different group of grabby second graders, before being returned to us along with a petite journal describing all of the overseas adventures experienced by the creature in question.

I remember those projects as if they were completed just yesterday; thus the reason I immediately thought of such elementary undertakings the moment I received the e-mail from Shira at WOM World/Nokia asking me if I would be so kind as to welcome the Nokia N97 Mini into my tech-savvy existence for two weeks to try out the fabulous phone known for its ability to combine style, communication, and technology into one pocket-sized package.

Despite the fact that my handbag is already home to a beloved BlackBerry and perky pink 16GB iPod Nano, not to mention more tubes of lip gloss than any sane person could possibly need, the offer of having the opportunity to try out such a fantastic new product was truly too great to refuse – therefore, I didn’t; and I could not be more pleased with my decision!

While Mini is not nearly as mini as her title led me to believe, her multifaceted characteristics more than make up for her size – which is, mind you, in no way bulky or cumbersome.

Harboring the ability to work as a touchscreen device a la the iPhone, or via a QWERTY keypad featuring a tilted screen that reduces the “glare” problem often encountered by the typical cell phone accessory which features a screen that lies flat; Mini is truly a magical gadget with a home screen that caters to your most frequented themes – a personalization that makes navigation to your favorite widgets (i.e. Facebook and e-mail) an absolute cinch!

But I digress; as a loyal BlackBerry user (I’ve yet to try the iPhone myself), I do find that navigating the World Wide Web with my BB is a far simpler and more enjoyable experience than with the Mini. Nevertheless, it is an adorable little device; and the fact that it retains the ability to cater to either preference of the user – be it QWERTY or touchscreen – is quite an appealing factor that would unquestionably play into one’s final decision before purchase.

Here’s a bit of advice, lovers…dial like it’s going out of style!

Tell me kitty cats, what type of phone do you call your own? Better yet, what type of phone do you wish you could call your own?

Fashionably yours!

Project Beyond the Runway

Edited by Fashion Pulse Daily

Reading through the links this week, I realized that fashion week or no fashion week, fashion will most certainly go on! A winter snowstorm couldn't even slow down New York Fashion Week, and the links below are testament to the wonderful style that exists beyond the runway, such as Ode to Awe's jewelry discovery, how to look chic while lounging by Cafe Fashionista, and tips for vintage shoe shopping by Wicked Whimsy. Don't get me wrong, I love being 'in the know' on runway looks and trends, but how you interpret them and work them into your personal style is so much more important than remembering which designers showed one-shoulder looks this season!

As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

Get Your Flirt On Giveaway

Don't allow the fact that we are living in the Twenty-First Century fool you ladies; we are just as clueless about boys as we were ages ago, only now we must deal with technological advances to create even more befuddlement. No longer do boys leave us little notes with cute cartoons scratched upon the surface, or write us love letters laced with ambrosial flourishes. Of course not; now it is all left up to text messaging.

Please don’t get me wrong, kittens; I love text messaging just as much as the next girl. But when you’re exchanging flirty messages with a cute boy, it can be downright confusing to concoct an adorable note in 160 words or less that will get you exactly what you want. Don’t fret missy…texting with cute boys most certainly does not have to be synonymous with pandemonium.

Debra Goldstein and Olivia Baniuszewicz’s Flirtexting: How to Text Your Way to His Heart is the book we have all been waiting for. Small enough to fit inside your handbag, and a perky pink hue, Flirtexting gives you the inside scoop on combating the many messaging conundrums that may freckle your love life; while providing pointers to help you snag the boy of your dreams in just a few coquettish conversations. It’s the He’s Just Not That Into You of the texting world. And now one (1) of you lovely lambs has the chance to call it your very own!

The Anti-Fashion Week

Edited by Dramatis Personae

That isn’t to say that I’m against Fashion Week… but more that this week’s Links á la Mode just really isn’t focused on it. With amazing interviews from kaKofoniesOfsi(gh)lens, Fashion in My Eyes, and Eternal Masquerade to great features on vintage clothing from Retro Chick and Unfunded, there’s as much fabulousness on off the catwalk as on.

Maybe it’s bitterness that I’ll be missing out on NYFW for the 3rd season in a row or maybe it’s my gentle heart preventing you all from Fashion Week burnout too soon…which it is, I’ll never tell.

A Touch of Frivolity

Edited by Retro Chick

It’s been a long time since pay day and this weeks Links à la Mode brings a touch of much needed frivolity as we crawl into the second month of a new decade. Idiosyncratic Style takes Scooby Doo’s Velma as her style inspiration, Dirty Hems is inspired by dolls houses and Ode to Awe shows off her leopard print nails. Want something for nothing? A few Goody Gumdrops has an Aspinall of London bag to giveaway and Retro Chick (that’s me!) has 2 Valentine goodie bags to giveaway worth over £100 each. We’ve also got some great designer interviews and some practical advice.

On a more sober note there’s some timely tips from Sway, Sway, Sway! on how you can continue to donate to Haiti without getting scammed, Shoe Daydreams discusses Tanya Golds “Why I hate Fashion” article and Ventures of Jenn shares her opinions on the body image debate.

This week, some of us looked back at icons of the past, such as // Fade to #c5c5c5's Marchesa Luisa Casati, Fabulous Finds Gal 's Horst photography post, and Cafe Fashionista's take on Diana Vreeland's famous quotes, while others looked at how far we've come, such as The Curvy Fashionista's plus size fashion observations and A Dress & A Bike 's thoughts on what it means to be sexy. Each post brought a unique angle to the subject at hand, and raised important topics of self-expression, style, adaptation, trends, individuality, and acceptance. It's fascinating to examine our own fashion-related introspection, and think about how our inner selves, thoughts and feelings, are reflected through the clothing choices we make, the pairing of certain looks, and of course our writing and blogs.

Smitten Saturday

On Pointe Darlings, I’m in the throes of a complete and utter tailspin at the moment fueled by my love of dancewear – legwarmers, to be exact. Years ago my sister gave me a pair for a combination birthday and Christmas present (oui, this is the type of thing that happens when your birthday falls just a few days before the holidays), which I promptly stuck in the back of my dresser where they were quickly forgotten. Only a few days ago did I re-discover them, and realize their true potential. They make a marvelous covering for the lower half if wearing tights, skinny jeans, or even for bare legs – adding a pinch of extra dimension and volume to your look. Hence the reason I’m eager to add more pieces into my wardrobe; the first being Free People’s Soft Sparkle Legwarmer in black which hugs the leg and adds a little shimmer to one’s step. The scalloped edges add a flirty touch to Sock Dreams’ Foot Traffic Ribbed Knit Leg Warmers. And I’m fully convinced that my winter wardrobe would be incomplete without a pair of Urban Outfitters’ Snap Up Legwarmers on hand to keep me snuggly and stylish! Are you on pointe yet, dolls?

Foodie Battle Royal Two things I cannot resist: fashion and a good food fight. Please don’t be confused; I am not condoning sticking your masterfully manicured fingers into a bowl of mashed potatoes and tossing a handful at the nearest cute boy. Nor am I instructing you to sling slimy, colorful JELL-O across the dinner table at your obnoxious younger brother. The type of delicious duel I am so addicted to at the moment is more akin to a computer-based version of Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Dolls, I may be incapable of whipping up anything more than toast, spaghetti, eggs, and, on occasion, cookies, but that doesn’t stop me from being obsessed with food52 – a place where I can get in on the action of scrummy scrimmages and tasty tussles involving all things edible with the mere click of a button. Each week two battles take place involving a similar recipe. After one year, the winning recipes will be published in one decadent book. Perhaps food52 is exactly the incentive I need to channel my inner kitchen goddess!

Plaid to the Bone You know what infuriates me to no end? Desiring a garment for months upon months yet never locating a piece that is ideal for you, and only you. Since February I have searched high and low for a plaid button-down that would cling to my curves yet retain a barely-there boyish boxiness to create an ever so slight androgynous silhouette; a covering with the ability to juxtapose between cosmopolitan class and messy magnificence. I have endlessly flipped through the racks at Target, debated between colors at T.J. Maxx, shuffled through page after fashionable page at Shopbop, and even missed out on fragments from Forever 21 due to an inability to make up my mind. But I have decided that the time has come to purchase perfection – if only to satisfy my black suede over-the-knee boots, which I’m convinced will look divine with such a style. I am officially at the end of my rope; thus, the time has come to make a final decision. Elizabeth and James’ Plaid School Boy Shirt is a sublime way of making masculine feminine courtesy of the corset-like three-button ruched gusset embellishing the back. The lumberjack inspiration of the BDG Flannel Buttondown Shirt in Blue Plaid seems a preemptive way to add un peu of nineties grunge to girly glam. William Rast’s purposely wrinkled Plaid Shirt is the perfect way to add a flirtatious, just-roused splash to one’s style. And the Belted Plaid Flannel Shirt? An unbeatable price plus an unbeatable style equals irresistible. I may have to buy both colors. Are you plaid to the bone?

On the Road Again Kittens, I am not embarrassed to admit that I was a slightly eccentric child growing up. Sassily precocious with a kick of cheekiness for added effect. I was also one of the biggest worriers you would ever encounter; thus, when I heard about a fire two states over on the news, I would pack a few bags with my beloved necessities, prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Evacuation never did become necessary, and I eventually grew out of stuffing suitcases with Pokemon cards, dolls, and handfuls of teeny tiny Barbie shoes. The one thing I never outgrew, however, was my love of luggage. Despite the fact that I have remained in the same area for most of my life, I have a bit of Becky Bloomwood in me, in the sense that I simply cannot resist travel essentials – specifically, vintage suitcases. I don’t care if they were made with the pint-sized in mind, I simply cannot ignore the 50s ambiance of Land of Nod’s pink Weekender Suitcase. Target’s Set of 3 Vintage-Style Suitcases would make for a très Titanic-inspired decoration for one’s abode. But alas, all things aside, it would be Steamline Luggage’s The Editor Series trimmed in pink which would be accompanying me on numerous travel adventures – all glamorous, I hope! Dolls, where will your lovely luggage take you?

She’s Wearing What? Does it happen to you as well, darlings? Do you find yourself salivating over a fabulous frock worn by Leighton Meester or a cozy cardigan donned by Rachel Bilson? Do you spend countless hours surfing the ‘Net and flipping through trashy supermarket tabloids all in the hopes of discovering the designer’s name so that you can recreate their look, or make it your own? You’re not alone, kittens. I find myself in a similar predicament on a nearly daily basis; and have done all of the above, and then some. Not anymore. Since discovering Closet Cravings I have no need to spend hours upon hours looking for the name of the label only to come out empty-handed. No, the heaven-sent Heather does all the work for me. In the past three weeks alone she has given me the scoop on Taylor Swift’s ambrosial Armani Exchange Top, provided me with the stat’s about Leighton’s sophisticated Nanette Lepore Last Tycoon Coat, and caused me to fall in love with Kristin Cavallari’s A.L.C. Leather Military Jacket. I’ll just be honest here…Closet Cravings makes it easy to be a celebrity style stalker; and really…who in their right, fashion-forward mind can resist simplicity like that?

What were you smitten with this week?

Fashionably yours!

Dock, Drop, and Roll

By now you’re probably thinking that I spoil my iPod to no end. I’m going to be honest with you kittens…I do. I would die without music, plain and simple; thus, in my mind, my iPod is synonymous with a living, breathing child. As such she should be showered with the same type of tender love and care that one would shroud their own offspring with. Already my tiny trinket is the proud recipient of iPod Socks; but I’m sorry to say that those only protect her from the harsh hazards she is subject to when out of doors. The majority of accidents happen at home; therefore, she needs a secure spot where she will be safe from harm of any and all kind – a wherever that is warm and wonderful; a hangout that is haute yet homey; a pad that is posh yet playful. Quite simply, I’m convinced that she needs an iPod + iPhone Speaker Dock/Clock RadioSony coupons.

So maybe I’m being slightly egocentric here. While my beloved photoelectronic will most definitely benefit from this item, I too have a vested interest in this particular purchase due to the fact that I am sick and tired of awaking to rubbish on the radio. With the iPod + iPhone Speaker Dock/Radio I will never again have to suffer from such a dreadful morning greeting.

Easily slide your wee musical pal into the très chic, sleek, and pristine dock that she will now be claiming as her own personal adorable abode, and set the alarm to the option you’d prefer – to wake up to your own playlist (yes please, mademoiselle!), or allow whatever tunes happen to turn up on the radio to rustle you from your slumber each morning.

No more will your mornings be trampled upon with maniacal musings from musical artists that do anything but tickle your fancy; no longer will your thoughts of your mini mechanism being minced, mashed, or mowed down within the confines of your fashionable foyer or enchanting entryway infiltrate your mind. The iPod + iPhone Speaker Dock/Clock Radio will keep your brain and your eardrums at peace. Now if only it came in pink!

Fashionably yours!

In Living Color

If you want to place blame on someone, kittens, by all means, please let it be on Elle Woods. After all, she’s the one I hold responsible for the entire debacle. If not for seeing her purchase a tantalizing tangerine hued Apple iBook computer in the film Legally Blonde I probably would have been completely content with a plain black or silver one; something extremely bland, but undoubtedly functional. After I was exposed to color, however, it was impossible to go back to blah when I could have beautiful. I’ll tell it to you straight loves; I searched high and low for that pumpkin-colored pretty. I scoured websites and browsed stores for ages, eager to make it mine; but when I finally found it, it was out of my price range, and soon after, it was gone altogether. Never again have I seen a laptop that tickled my fancy in such a way; until now. The Mini 10 NetbooksDell coupons – are the new apple of my technology-loving eye.

Now I know what you’re thinking; you are under the impression that I selected this particular piece to fancy all because I can have my pick of any color in the rainbow (red, pink, green, blue…) but that’s simply not the truth at all; or at least not the whole truth. Yes, I am convinced that everyone is more creative when color is involved; but I truly do adore the Mini 10 Netbooks because they put the world at my fingertips at a price that doesn’t knock the wind out of me. And, you know, they are quite pretty. But, I suppose, that’s beside the point.

With the Mini 10 Netbook I can fulfill my dreams of blogging from anywhere and everywhere. Today I may be boasting about a new pair of boots while flying over Brazil; tomorrow I may be chattering on about the newest addition to my cocktail ring collection from some secluded sidewalk café in New York City’s Chinatown. The truth of the matter is, darlings, with the Mini 10, I could be talking to you from locations where you’d least expect me to pop up. The only identifier of my…character? My bubblegum pink computer, of course; oui, if I have concluded anything during all this it’s that my computer, like myself, must be pretty in pink.

Which color catches your eye, dolls?

Sock It to Me

I've been selfish, kittens; so very, very selfish. All this time I have thought of nothing but clothing myself, and ensuring that I was warm when the weather turned brisk; but I was neglecting someone, something, very close to me. My wee iPod, an electronic that is more akin to a lifelong best friend than a mere technological invention, has endured bumps and bruises, scrapes and scuffles, even stomps and sideswipes. But, above all, my teeny music mogul has had to brave countless harsh winters with nary a blanket to keep her warm or stylish. In this fashion, as an early gift to commemorate our many years together, I have decided to bestow my tiny trinket with...iPod Socks - Apple Computer coupons.

I already know what you’re thinking. The wheels are churning in that pretty little head of yours, commenting on the ridiculousness of this item; but I must defend myself here, and point out that this is anything but a frivolous purchase, mind you. This is a necessity of utmost importance. You are not simply clothing your iPod by slipping her into a pair of vibrantly colored socks; but ensuring her safety as the material acts as a buffer, a guardian angel, of sorts, from the cruel and dangerous outside world.

Guilelessly slide your petite photoelectronic device into the knit sock for safe-keeping, the same way you would glide your own meticulously manicured foot into a pair of Wolford tights. When a playlist change is called for, or a docking is required, easily pop her out of her cushy humble abode, and work your way through the task at hand before returning her to her chichi crash pad. Oui, the iPod Socks are to your mini mechanism what the high-rise Park Avenue penthouse I aspire to someday reside in is to me – a swank shelter not for the feint of heart.

But I digress, I suppose I should drop the theatrics – or at least tone it down. Don’t be fooled, your iPod isn’t the only one who will benefit from this accessory – you will too. Yes, to be completely honest, I’m guilty of another count of selfishness. I assume that it’s time to divulge the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. My little iPod is with me 24/7…and she sticks out like a sore thumb. Thus, by investing in Apple’s iPod Socks, I’ll be ensuring a constant color-coordinated companion, as a single set lodges six socks in the requisite shades needed to spice up any ensemble – gray, blue, pink, orange, green, and purple.

Forgive me, darlings, no harm was meant from my amore propre; just a desire to add a creative, colorful, cozy kick to my adored accessory. To be truthful, who knew you could have so much fashion fun at the Apple store? Now go ahead…sock it to your iPod!

Fashionably yours!

Virtual Clutch

As a fashion blogger what two things are you incapable of living without? For me, it’s a laptop and a chic clutch. Why? Well, for one, without a laptop I would be virtually (no pun intended) lost; and two, what girl wants to go through life without a fabulous clutch taking up space in her closet? So of course I’ve gone completely gaga over this Vivienne Tam Special Edition Mini 1000 Digital Clutch. At just 10-inches and 2.45 pounds, this is the crème de la crème of clutches. The best thing? It’s pink! And red! With flowers! And...there’s a matching scarf and tote! What more could a fashion-obsessed girl ask for?
