Tightwad Tuesday: Bop Basics Faux Fur Trapper Hat on a Budget

My loves, to your left feast your eyes on Bop Basics’ fabulous Faux Fur Trapper Hat; on the right take a peek at Forever 21’s Faux Fur Hat.

While the Forever 21 marvel is a slightly lighter brown hue than the Bop Basics beauty, and sports dangling tassel pom-poms; for a mere $10.80, in comparison to the $98.00 needed to take the blissful Bop Basics piece home, it is just as capable of adding a smattering of stylish coziness to one’s look du jour, at a price that is oh-so right for the budget babe!

Are you having a tightwad moment darlings, or are you plagued with a craving to splurge?

Sunday Steals: Brooks Brothers Piped Fedora Hat for Less

Darlings, on your left you will find the bombastic Brooks Brothers Piped Fedora Hat, a similar look to the one Emmy Rossum has been seen sporting as of late; on the right you will spot J. Crew’s Panama Hat.

While the J. Crew gem is constructed out of true toquilla straw just as the beautiful Brooks Brothers piece is; it is far less expensive, requiring a mere $58.00 to make it your own, as opposed to the $198.00 needed to take the Piped Fedora Hat home.

Tell me, kittens…will you be a big spender and go for Brooks Brothers, or be thrifty and spring for J. Crew?

Tightwad Tuesday: Free People Lolita Stud Hat for Less

Please don’t, darlings. Do not attempt to leave the house without properly accessorizing your ensemble. You may think that your cocktail dress is fine as is, but it would look so much more tantalizing if embellished with a statement necklace. And I can’t tell you how much more enticing your simple t-shirt would be if only transformed into designer fashion with a Collective Eighteen Pleated Chiffon Scarf in Red Pepper. Ignoring the lure and the masterful power of accessories is completely out of the realms of my way of thinking. I only hope that such behavior never crosses your mind either, kittens.

Of course, the accessory in question is not of the baubled variety this time. Sure, it sparkles and twinkles in its own way, but the shimmering splendor has more to do with the studs spotting its surface than with any type of diamond decoration; a fabrication that turns ordinary into extraordinary – a minute garnishment that is bold and brazen yet soft and demure all at once. Oui, Free People’s Lolita Stud Hat is all this and more.

Aside from a knit beret sitting snugly atop my hair every now and then, the closest I ever get to a hat is a very ladylike headband perched atop the crown of my head like a princess’s tiara; but I have seen one too many cute band boys as of late rocking fedoras, and I am convinced that my wardrobe is in dire need of one – even if it only comes out in the dead of night for crazy parties. I refuse, however, to forgo feminine detailing, which is why I am so smitten with the Lolita Stud Hat.

The stud adorned double-wrap buckled strap that criss-crosses about the inner brim is a splash of girly glam with the ability to make one feel like a rebellious rocker chick – not a groupie, mind you – and would make for the most wonderful accessory for a wild Saturday night starring you and your out of control friends. Unfortunately, the telltale piece of the puzzle that I am completely not smitten with is the $98.00 pricetag. I refuse to pay such an exorbitant price for a fedora – albeit a fabulous one – that will be spending more time in my closet than on my head. Luckily, Forever 21, as is their custom, is here to save the day.

The Shiny Dot Trim Fedora, while not outfitted in studs, has a brim covered in dazzling sequins which are easily as effective at casting a pinch of radiance about your person, and making you a glitzy sight to behold no matter the atmosphere. And at $12.80 it is most certainly a more budget-friendly addition to your amassment of accessories.

Are you having a tightwad moment darlings, or are you plagued with a craving to splurge?

Fashionably yours!

Cabbie Chic

Despite the dangers that accompany being a New York City cab driver, there’s an old time elegance and charm that accompanies the trade. A glamorous yet gritty noir attributed to the hidden hazards, the possible clandestine romances, even the fear and loathing pouring off the strangers in the backseat. Perhaps it is that mysteriousness, that elusive essence that makes the thought of being a cabbie so intriguing, yet downright frightful. To be on the safe side no, I won’t contemplate a career change. I’ll simply steal a slice of cabbie chic and plop it right about my head in the form of a dapper cabbie hat. After all darlings, what better way to get your fabulous fashion motor running than with a stylish piece of headwear for fall!

mark “City Riding Hat” Who knew that it was possible to find a cap crafted out of a juxtaposition of riding gear and cabbie fabulous? One is synonymous with polished refinery of the jet set, the other of abrasive attitude of the lower class. Together, however, they form the grandeur known as mark’s City Riding Hat. The typical stuffy brown tweed is sliced and diced into a round-brim beauty with a tailored fit that adds a bit of hoodlum to your haute couture; while brass-button embellishments flanking the brim add an understated twinkle to the luscious lid. I’m sure by now you’ve met mark; but have you met the mark City Riding Hat?

Urban Outfitters “EEK! By Eugenia Kim Riding Cap” I’m not the flaxen-haired femme fatale of the Once Upon A Time…fairytales we aspired to be as children, kittens. Quite the opposite, in fact. My hair is of a darker hue – a light brown, to be exact. Therefore, when I decide to top my mane with a hat, it must be one that will stand front and center atop my head, not blend in with its darker surroundings; which, of course, explains my affections for the EEK! By Eugenia Kim Riding Cap. The knit shell is soft to the touch, and features the most divine little boxy blocked print adornment; whilst the ivory color corresponds magically with the ambrosial chocolate flushed hatband dressed up with antique hardware, a combination that’s almost good enough to eat!

August Accessories “Military Cap with Bow” Paging Blair Waldorf! If there’s any doubt in your mind about a cabbie hat having the power to transform ordinary into extraordinary; to turn slouch to starlet; to morph bland to beguiling…well, August Accessories’ Military Cap with Bow is most definitely it. The chocolate and pink shades work as one to blend dainty and demure with dark and dangerous; the end result being a debonair delight with the perennial possibility of prettying up every item in your closet. Tossing masculine touches to the wayside, the Military Cap with Bow embraces femininity at its finest, staying true to the color scheme of the headgear, while accommodating a captivating bow with brass button accent which keeps the acrid style adorable. You don’t have to say a word love; I already know that this cap will be perched upon your head from now until New Year’s!

Juicy Couture “Wool/Cashmere Newsboy Cap” Mes chéris, promise me you won’t fret. Don’t think of it as an emergency if you are draped in dark colors from head to toe. You can still be a petite pretty in pink mademoiselle as long as you have Juicy Couture’s Wool/Cashmere Newsboy Cap perched atop that no-nonsense noggin of yours. From the moment you slip this slouchy stunner on you’ll be in hat heaven, for the wool/cashmere blend is as soft as freshly-lotioned skin. But softness isn’t the key here…rather, it’s just one of the keys to happiness – the others are made up of tiny touches here, and covetsome additions there that make you over the moon – a single gold tone button that sits askew above the brim, and the tiny tab on the crown synonymous with berets; a piece of French flair for your all-American style. Maintenant...don't vous paraissez joli!

Forever 21 “Diamond-Shaped Cabbie Hat” Honestly, I’ve always known that diamonds were a girls best friend; but Forever 21’s Diamond-Shaped Cabbie Hat has made me much more aware of that sentiment courtesy of the categorically cute diamond pattern garnishing each and every nook and cranny of its surface. But the crème de la crème lies not in its ornament, mind you, nor in its affordability. It is the versatility factor that keeps the Diamond-Shaped Cabbie Hat a fashionable prize in my eyes; for the very Oliver Twist buttoned front strap? Well, my dears, it can be removed at a moment’s notice – you know, for those moments in life when you crave a little change, no matter how minimal. Mes amis, I hope you’re on your feet, for I’m already scooping these yarn-crafted gems up by the dozen – I’ll keep my fingers crossed that there are some left for you!

Are you ready to make cabbie chic your own?

Fashionably yours!

La Femme Mystérieuse

Oh darlings, I tried, I certainly tried, but it was difficult…scratch that, impossible for me to resist this new piece of headwear. I’ve already admitted that, as someone who has bangs, it’s not a good idea to smother them with a well-placed hat. It’s better to simply adorn my head with bands of poppy colors and sizes. But alas, I couldn’t turn away from this Kimchi Blue Straw Ribbon Floppy from UO – Urban Outfitters coupons.

Ever since I met the precocious, Plaza-dwelling Eloise, I have found myself obsessed with going incognito. With keeping to myself, and staying a mystery to random passersby. To ooze affluence and sophistication, yet remain completely anonymous to anyone on the outskirts of my inner circle. The Kimchi Blue Straw Ribbon Floppy makes all this and more possible.

The natural-colored woven beauty is dressed up with a skinny black grosgrain ribbon, and emphasizes a very day-at-the-Derby type of elegance what with its down-turned brim, and ability to be shaped and molded to your hearts desire. Whereas the American Apparel Wool Floppy Hat seems more fitting for the cooler fall and winter months; this particular piece seems more appropriately outfitted for the warmer spring and summer months when it can be paired with flirty sundresses, ankle-tied espadrilles, colorful tanks, and patterned bikinis.

Now is the time to do it loves. Toss aside your oversized sunglasses, plop this slice of sublimity atop your head, and unleash your inner femme mystérieuse!

A Floppy Fervor

Yes, I have been lusting after American Apparel’s Wool Floppy Hat since writing about it way back in March a la Floppy and Fabulous. Yes, one of the reason’s why I am a headcase over this magnificent piece of headwear is because I am tempted to channel Brigitte Bardot’s effortless yet tres chic style. And yes, one of my rationale’s for not having yet shelled out the $40 in order to call this beauty my own has to do with the fact that I tend to purchase hats, wear them once, then toss them into the back of my closet where they collect dust until I eventually give them away to some poor, deserving soul.

But, dear me, I simply don’t see this hat facing the same fate. Nay, the Wool Floppy Hat is the cream of the crop. The best of the best. The pick of the litter. It is the epitome of all things fabulous, what with its wide brim and natural – but completely trendy – color options. And how is it possible that one simple accessory can be so multifaceted?

I’m off to the beach. My tote is in hand; my sunglasses are covering my eyes, and what’s on my head? My Wool Floppy Hat in light grey – the perfect complement to my pink monokini.

I’ve been invited out for drinks with a few out-of-town friends who unexpectedly stopped by for a visit. I’m donning my little black dress, but I want a statement piece that will help me feel sultry yet mysterious. I’ve just the thing to enhance my look – my Wool Floppy Hat in black!

My plane is coming in for a landing. I’m about to step off this aircraft onto European soil with a serious case of bedhead, looking anything but fabulous. But wait! I have my Wool Floppy Hat in luggage brown in tow. Paired with my leggings and oversized sweater I’ll look anything but bedraggled.

Stop! Don’t tell me that this hat won’t work with your wardrobe, because it will. Don’t use the excuse that you don’t look good in a hat, because you’ll look fabulous in this one. Don’t state that this marvel is out of your price range, because $40 for a handcrafted hat made of natural fibers is a steal.

That’s it. I’ve convinced myself. I’m in dire need of this sassy piece of splendor. Be still my heart.

Fashionably yours!

Falling for the Fedora

When Vanessa Hudgens wore one on the cover of Cosmogirl! not too long ago, I was unimpressed. When I saw a handful of celebrities traipsing down the street with the funky accessory perched casually atop their head, I was annoyed. But over the past few weeks, I have realized just how versatile this piece of headwear truly is. It can be worn with dresses. It can be worn with shorts. It can be worn with skinny jeans. Heck, it can even be worn by your grungy boyfriend. Yes, I have a confession to make...I am falling for the fedora.

Eugenia Kim “Max Vented Toyo Fedora with Patent Trim and Buckle” In my search for fedoras, I have quickly realized that designer Eugenia Kim reigns as queen. She has created enough styles and colors to fit every mood and personality; though my absolute favorite piece by her is the Max Vented Toyo Fedora with Patent Trim and Buckle. The camel and brown colored perforated material is the most perfect thing for summer; but it’s the skinny black patent trim and buckle which resembles a trendy belt that has truly caught my eye. I can’t help but want to wear this with a sparkly fitted mini-dress for a night out with the girls.

Forever 21 “Basketweave Feather Fedora” When it comes to clothes, I tend to steer clear of prints, and stick closer to solids. When it comes to accessories, however, the opposite is often true. Which is why I find this Basketweave Feather Fedora utterly adorable. While it’s not tweed, the black, white, and gray basketweave design is very close to it; and the forest green grosgrain fabric bow hatband manages to add a nice contrasting touch. But the true piece de resistance is the spotted yellow feather, which fits quite well with the feather obsession I’ve been harboring for the past six months!

Urban Outfitters “Indestructible Fedora” I will admit that part of the reason that this fedora has grabbed my attention has to do with it’s name, the Indestructible Fedora. It makes you think of it as a piece of headwear that has some type of superhuman (or perhaps superhat) powers. But the fact that it’s constructed of a gray material that possesses a stone blue hue has more to do with my affections. Add in the tonal ribbon band and the fact that it has a slightly different fit than the typical fedora, and all I can say is je veux!

RVCA “ Hamptons Fedora” As someone with brown hair (albeit light/golden brown hair), when it comes to hats I often favor light colors, so they truly pop. Thus, it was love at first sight with this RVCA Hamptons Fedora in White. Crafted completely of paper straw, this is a cream colored piece of perfection that has quickly won the key to my heart. The slightly downturned brim. The thin pink hatband. The flirty, lightweight color. I can already picture myself frolicking upon the beach in a bikini with this lovely sitting jauntily upon my head.

Banana Republic “Canvas Fedora” Since I’ve already confessed to falling in love with the fedora, and admitted to having a feather obsession, I find it only necessary to tell you that I have never in my entire life set foot in a Banana Republic store; but since spotting this chic Canvas Fedora, I truly regret that decision. While hats don’t usually seem like fitting office attire, there is a part of me that wants to go out and buy a fitted business suit in a sleek gray color, and pair it with this fashionable piece. There is something so very retro about this hat that makes me completely gaga. My hand is creeping towards my wallet...who knows, this hat could be on my doorstep in less than a week!

Have you fallen for the fedora?

Fashionably yours!

Tip Top

Obsessed. That is the only term that I can use to accurately describe my feelings towards top hat hair accessories. I don’t like them. I don’t dislike them. Yet for some inexplicable reason they interest me in a way that no other piece of headwear has before.

They are very reminiscent of the Mad Hatter’s headpiece of choice in the adorable yet oftentimes trippy Alice in Wonderland. Yet possess a little slice of gentleman’s flair; in addition to girly touches – feathers, mesh netting, bows, ribbons – to make them fabulously feminine as well.

Top hats? Terrific. Headbands? Never leave home without one. Top hats and headbands together? It’s a look that makes me say hmmm...

Is this a statement accessory that you could see yourself buying and wearing while out and about; or would you steer clear of it should you spot it in a store during a shopping spree?

The Classy Cloche

Blame it on my current reading of Marion Meade’s Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin: Writers Running Wild in the Twenties, or my years-long obsession with Fitzgerald’s Daisy Buchanan, but I am currently obsessed with the fashion of the twenties. Namely, the cloche hat. The cloche hat, with its wide brim and bell shape is both sophisticated and romantic, and the most darling choice of headwear for the warmer months. Which is why I am in dire need of one. Stat!

Why is it that whenever I’m searching for an item that fits my current whim I am able to locate it at Forever 21? The cloche hat is no different. Their Amelia Wool Cloche has become one of my daily internet visitations. The brown felt, tied with a demure black velour ribbon with bow is just too adorable for words. The mere sight of this hat alone leaves me breathless. I could most certainly see this magnificent headwear looking perfect paired with a broach-adorned capelet. Oh how I want it!

Flowers and floral designs and prints are one of the most popular trends for the spring and summer so, of course, I had to contain my happy squeals when I spotted this Callanan Alina Floral Banded Cloche. The chocolate backdrop is scrumptiously decadent, and the little splash of color added by the felt flower, adorned with contrasting stitching, is, to put it bluntly, practically perfect in every way.

This Madison cloche from Couture Creations is possibly my absolute favorite hat of the bunch, and not just because the color is reminiscent of red wine: another staple of the hard-partying beautiful people of the twenties. No, much of my love for this stylish little cap has to do with the brown velour felt flower like bow, which, if Wikipedia is correct, signifies that “the wearer was single and interested in mingling.”

If you ask me, rhinestones and jewels have the ability to make just about anything a little bit more fabulous – including hats. This Billabong Flapper Hat is no exception. At first, you may think it’s your typical black cloche; but at second glance you can see two divine details: a grosgrain ribbon, and a multi-colored jeweled broach that just happens to be removable. It’s like two treats in one, plus, the whole package is so much fun!

I’ve never been a huge fan of straw hats, but even I can’t deny the easy, breezy, beautiful look they add to just about any outfit. They have such a carefree spirit to them which makes me want to cast all cares to the wind and just prance around merrily. Maybe I’ll do just that in this adorable Straw Cloche Hat. The color is perfectly lovely, but it’s the contrasting black grosgrain ribbon and bow that work together in making me fantasize about an afternoon spent lounging away on a picnic blanket, lemonade in one hand, a classic paperback in the other.

My only question now is whether or not I have the appropriate hairstyle to pull off a cloche. Cloche hats seem like they were made for the bob, or cute crops that are pixie-like and ethereal. I have neither. Instead my hair (which I adore, and take great pride in) is waist-length and home to eyebrow-length bangs, very bohemian/seventies hippie. Should I try pairing a cloche with that ‘do, or simply admire the retro headgear from afar?

Fashionably yours!

Floppy and Fabulous

I honestly don’t know how Brigitte Bardot managed to find such fantastic floppy hats, because on my quest to locate just one, I have come across nothing but overbearing headwear that virtually eats your head alive, or flops into your eyes, making you unable to see anything within a five-inch radius. It’s a frustrating predicament that leads me to believe that locating the perfect floppy hat is akin to finding a needle in a haystack. Virtually impossible. But, alas, perhaps I’m wrong. After a few rushed lunch hour internet searches I have managed to locate not one, not two, but five floppy hats filled with fashionable possibilities. Now the only issue standing in the way of me and floppy fabulosity is deciding which one will make the cut...here are the contenders.

When searching for clothing and accessories, American Apparel has never ranked very high on my "check it out" list. In fact, at times I have a tendency to completely forget to check their site for new products. The moment I spotted their Wool Floppy Hat, $40, however, all that changed. Light grey, luggage brown, black...the colors alone are perfect, but the shape, paired with just the right amount of floppy glamour makes it pure perfection. I can't help but feel that donning this gem would make me feel like an old-time movie star, or a chic French fashionista.

Bows are my weakness. They're adorable yet possess such a high-fashion sense of glamour that is, in my opinion, utterly irresistible. Which is why my jaw literally hit the floor when I discovered this Juicy Couture Women's Wool Felt Floppy Hat, $59.50. This is one of those fabulous finds that impulse buys are made of.

Straw hats seem like the headwear of choice when spending a day at the beach. They're lightweight, match just about any outfit (or bathing suit), and are inexpensive. That said, as much as I love a day spent by the seashore, walking along the boardwalk in a swingy sundress with espadrilles strapped upon my feet, I have never been able to find the beauty in straw hats. Until now. Through their Topstitch Grosgrain Floppy Hat, $10.80, Forever 21 has revived the oftentimes blase straw hat by weaving a grosgrain ribbon through the stitching that gives it a more youthful vibe that is both trendy and fun. With this adorable detailing, I can honestly say that straw hats will never be the same again!

I'm not sure whether it's the kitschy colors or the scalloped trim, but this Billabong Current Hat, $14.99, makes me want to step into a pair of bellbottoms, slip on some wedge platforms, and toss up a peace sign. It's the perfect way to celebrate the seventies, and channel your inner Woodstock-attending, VW van-driving, flower-loving hippie.

I am slowly realizing that colors such as cranberry, raspberry, and maroon have almost the same neutral-appeal as black, gray, and white. Which is possibly why I'm in love with this Glamorous Burgundy Wide Brim Diva Style Floppy Hat, $15.99. The color is reminiscent of red wine, and would look absolutely heavenly paired with a simple black turtleneck and dark wash skinny jeans. This would make for an intoxicating addition to any fashionista's hat collection!

So...what's your take on floppy hats - yay or neigh?

Fashionably yours!
